Ottawa boasts a new, state-of-the-art international airport, Macdonald Cartier International Airport (YOW), which is a 20–25 minute drive (16 km/10 miles) from the city center.
The Ottawa airport shuttle, YOW Airporter (big and yellow, you can't miss them!), has service to the downtown core for CAN$15, or less if you are traveling with others. Taxi service one-way costs about CAN$35 from the airport to downtown Ottawa.
Ottawa's public transportation offers a variety of ways to get you where you want to go. Buses and taxis are all commonly used to get around. Prices for the various methods of transporation differ. Keep in mind that taxis do not take credit cards. For more information about transporation, click here.
When asked your reason for visiting, keep your answer simple and truthful:
"I am attending a conference at the Ottawa Convention Centre."
Saying that you are "working in Ottawa" could raise further questions about your visa status, complicating customs procedures. In most cases, you will clear customs at your point of entry in Canada.
Attendees may also want to carry copies of their conference confirmation, letter of invitation and/or other documentation about the conference if further questions should arise.
Bringing children into Ottawa
Customs officers looking for missing children may ask questions about the children traveling with you. If you plan on traveling with children, special paperwork may be required. Please contact your local Canadian Embassy or consulate for more information.
